August 22, 2007 Mae Stevens Smith, 96, formerly of Seneca Avenue, Canastota, died on Wednesday, August 22, 2007, at Oneida Healthcare Center, following a lengthy illness. Born in Thendara, town of Webb, on February 22, 1911, she was the daughter of Charles B. and Mae Eugena Abbey Stevens. A resident of the area for the past 52 years, Mrs. Smith graduated from Old Forge High School. She was predeceased by her first husband, Austin Proper, and later married Clinton Smith in 1955. Mr. Smith died on November 26, 1976. Prior to her retirement in 1971, Mrs. Smith was employed with General Electric as an engineer technician; and during World War II, she worked on the Norden bomb site for the war effort. She was of the Protestant faith. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Reed and Barbara Proper of Old Forge; two nieces, Dawn Towne of Weedsport and Addie March of Sauquoit; two nephews, Charles Scouten of Sauquoit and Richard L. Smith of Canastota; two grandsons, Steven Proper of Sylvan Beach and Forrest Proper of Old Forge; and several other nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three sisters, Flossie Scouten, Bessie Gleasman and Ella Gaudin. Funeral services will be held 9:30 a.m. Saturday from Campbell-Dean Funeral Home, Inc., 300 South Peterboro Street, Canastota. Interment will be made in Lenox Rural Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday, prior to the funeral service. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Greater Lenox Ambulance Service, P.O.
